Rio Receives Capital Funding to Bolster Workforce Training

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced significant investments in workforce and higher education infrastructure through Senate Bill 450. Rio is set to receive $7.5 million for critical campus improvements that will expand capacity, modernize training environments, and strengthen the region’s workforce pipeline.

“Our goal is to modernize key facilities to better serve students and employers while directly strengthening the region’s talent pipeline,” said Ryan Smith, President of University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College. “These investments position Rio to respond to workforce needs across healthcare, agriculture, advanced manufacturing, and skilled trades.”

Funding will support a comprehensive renovation of the Kidd Math and Science Center, including upgrades to science laboratories and the addition of space designed to accommodate potential new academic programs. Improvements will also enhance agriculture programs, allowing students to train using industry-standard equipment and meet credentialing requirements.

The Davis Career Center will undergo renovations to expand capacity for high-demand technical programs and create flexible mechanical and industrial training spaces. The updated facility will support increased enrollment and enable the development of new programs aligned with regional workforce priorities.

Enrollment in these programs continues to grow as employers across healthcare, agriculture, and advanced manufacturing seek job‑ready graduates. The modernization will ensure students gain hands-on experience in environments that mirror today’s workplaces and ultimately helping local industries address persistent workforce shortages.

Additionally, the Lyne Center will receive a new roof and upgraded HVAC system, enhancing energy efficiency while ensuring a safe and healthy environment for students. The facility supports one of Rio’s fastest-growing areas, sports and exercise studies, as well as an expanding student-athlete population.

“Rio would like to give a huge thank you to Governor DeWine and the Ohio General Assembly for their support,” said Smith. “The investment will strengthen student recruitment efforts and ensure long-term sustainability of academic programming.”

Construction and renovation across all three facilities are expected to be completed by Fall 2027.
