Rio Announces Two New Academic Deans
University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Terry Farris as Dean of the College of Business & Technology and Dr. Suzanne Konz as Dean of the College of Health Studies.
The appointments are part of a new academic structure that expands Rio from two academic colleges to three, joining the College of Arts & Sciences, led by Dean Lynley Carey. The reorganization reflects Rio’s commitment to academic excellence, strategic growth, and enhanced student support while positioning the institution to meet evolving workforce and community needs.
“We are pleased to welcome both deans and look forward to their contributions to our students and campus community,” said Dr. David Lawrence, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs.
Dr. Farris brings more than 20 years of leadership experience in higher education, workforce development, and academic administration to his new role. Most recently, he served as Executive Director of Workforce and Community Education at Terra State Community College, where he led workforce development initiatives, cultivated partnerships with business and industry, and expanded educational opportunities throughout the region.
During his career, Dr. Farris has held a variety of leadership positions, including Chief Academic Officer, Academic Dean, Chief Compliance Officer, Campus President, and Director of Education. His extensive background in academic leadership and workforce engagement will help advance Rio’s efforts to align educational programs with employer needs and career opportunities.
Dr. Konz joins Rio with more than 15 years of progressive leadership experience in higher education, most recently serving as Professor, Program Director, and Department Head in the College of Health Professions at Marshall University. A respected educator, administrator, and clinician, she has led undergraduate and graduate programs in biomechanics, sports science, and strength and conditioning while overseeing curriculum development, accreditation, faculty mentoring, and strategic planning.
Her accomplishments include launching new degree programs, expanding online and hybrid learning opportunities, and building partnerships that strengthen experiential learning and workforce readiness. Nationally recognized for her leadership in health professions education and professional practice, Dr. Konz brings a strong record of innovation, collaboration, and student-centered leadership. Her vision will help guide the continued growth of Rio’s health studies programs while supporting new opportunities for students pursuing careers in healthcare and related fields.
“The new structure is designed to strengthen academic leadership, enhance collaboration, and provide greater focus for each college’s mission and goals,” said Dr. Lawrence.
The creation of a dedicated College of Health Studies reflects the continued expansion and importance of healthcare education and provides focused oversight of health-related programs, accreditation efforts, industry partnerships, and student success initiatives.
The three-college model positions Rio to create clearer pathways for academic development, program innovation, and enrollment growth. As part of its long-term strategic plan, the University intends to expand its academic portfolio, including the development of additional undergraduate and graduate programs that support regional workforce demands and student interests.
With the addition of Dr. Farris and Dr. Konz, Rio continues to invest in strong academic leadership and a student-focused future, ensuring graduates are prepared to succeed in an evolving workforce.
