Rio Hires Local Native Ryan Donini as New Band Director
University of Rio Grande announces the appointment of Ryan Donini as its new Band Director. Donini brings a wide range of experience at the secondary, collegiate, and international levels.
He spent the past 14 years at South Webster High School as band director. His background includes two years as a Graduate Assistant at Tiffin University, working closely with the university band program, and teaching abroad at the American School of Milan in Italy, where he instructed band, choir, general music, and drama.
Originally from Minford, Ohio, Donini earned his undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University and has a strong connection to Appalachian Ohio and its students.
“I’ve always felt the energy on this campus,” Donini said. “From basketball games to community events, there’s a warmth and excitement here that’s hard to describe. The crowd is always engaged and supportive, and you can tell the campus and community are truly invested in student success.”
Although leaving South Webster was not an easy decision, Donini said the opportunity to grow a university program offering marching band, symphonic band, and pep band was a powerful draw.
“I’m excited about the challenge of recruiting and building the program,” he said. “I love talking with students and families, asking questions, and building a strong process. Success to me looks like a high‑functioning band with strong numbers, deep school spirit, and the full support of the university community.”
Donini added that he is especially excited to serve local students, so they don’t feel they have to leave the area to pursue music.
Jeff Lanham, Rio’s Athletic Director, welcomed Donini to campus and emphasized the value of a strong band presence at Rio.
“Ryan brings enthusiasm, experience, and a clear vision for building school spirit,” Lanham said. “Our band will play a huge role in the game‑day experience, and Ryan understands how music, athletics, and campus culture come together. We’re excited to see him grow the program and energize our crowds.”
Beyond music education, Donini has recently completed his principal’s license and continues research for his dissertation focused on Appalachian education. In his personal time, he enjoys playing guitar and spending time with his wife, Shanna.
