Graduates’ Breakfast

The Rio Grande Alumni Association and Interim President Catherine M. Clark invite all graduates and their guests to the Graduates’ Breakfast that will be held prior to practice on Friday, May 3. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. in the Davis University Center Cafeteria. Charge for guests is $5.00 (cash only) payable at the door. There is no fee for graduates. Breakfast begins at 8:30 a.m. and remarks will be made at 9:15 a.m.. Graduates will be dismissed for practice at 9:30 a.m.

Commencement Practice

Rehearsal for Commencement will begin at approximately 9:45 a.m. on Friday, May 3 in front of Davis Library. Marching assignments will be given at this time. Practice should be over by 10:30 a.m. It is important that graduates attend rehearsal. In case of inclement weather, practice will be held in Lyne Center.

Graduates who want to ensure proper name pronunciation should contact their Dean during commencement practice or within two days of the ceremony.

Caps and Gowns

Graduates may pick up caps and gowns in the Rio Bookstore in Rhodes Center. Rain tickets are attached to caps and gowns.

Monday, April 29 through Friday, May 3: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Saturday, May 4:  8:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon

Graduates’ Attire

Recommendations: No shorts, jeans, tennis shoes or high heels.

Photographs & Videos

Photographs: Graduation Foto® is excited to be your school’s commencement photographer. All graduates will be photographed during the ceremony and photos will be available for purchase. If you have any questions, please visit

Guests must not block aisles or stage ramps while taking their own photographs and videos.


The Marketplace (Davis University Center, Cafeteria) will serve an elegant brunch from 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Meal plans and guest meal plans will be honored. Guest rate is $6.95.


Graduates should assemble in cap and gown on Saturday, May 4, at 12:30 p.m. in their assigned area in front of Davis Library. The academic procession will start at 1:00 p.m. Graduates who cannot attend must get permission from the Registrar, Tami Sheets (ext. 7209) or These students will graduate in absentia.


Outdoor seating is first come, first serve. Although there should be ample seating available, guests are welcome to bring their own chairs. After the benediction, chairs will need to be removed from the circle on the green to make room for the singing of the Alma Mater.

If the ceremony is in Lyne Center, seating is on the bleachers and requires a ticket for admission. Seating will be available beginning at noon.

In case of rain

Lyne Center’s Newt Oliver Arena is the backup facility in case of inclement weather. Graduates will receive 4 tickets for their guests when they pick up their caps and gowns. These tickets will be required for entry into the gymnasium. Graduates must make arrangements to distribute the rain tickets to their guests before the ceremony. These tickets will be used only in case of rain. If graduates have more than 4 guests, additional guests may view the ceremony via simulcast at the following locations:

  • Associate’s Degree Graduates: Morris Haskins Auditorium, 118 Bob Evans Farms Hall
  • Bachelor’s Degree Graduates: Christensen Theatre, Berry Arts Center
  • Master’s Degree Graduates: Christensen Theatre, Berry Arts Center

In case of rain, announcements regarding moving the ceremony indoors will be made by 11:00 a.m. on:

  • WKOV 96.7 FM, Jackson
  • WXBW 101.5 FM, Huntington
  • WBYG 99.5 FM, Pt. Pleasant
  • WOUB 91.3 FM, Athens
  • WNTO 93.1 FM, Gallipolis

Handicapped Parking

Handicapped parking will be available on North College Avenue. That street will otherwise be closed. Visitors should display handicapped parking tags. There are also handicapped spaces in the parking area near Lyne Center in case of rain.


Graduates completing degree requirements in spring semester may pick up diplomas in Florence Evans Hall beginning Tuesday, May 28th – Friday, June 7th. Diplomas not picked up will be mailed beginning Monday, June 10th.

Summer graduates will receive diplomas via United States Postal Service after final grades and degrees have been posted. Please notify the Office of the Registrar at 740-245-7369, or email at if you prefer to pick up your diploma instead of having it mailed.
