Grievances and Complaints

Rio is committed to a supportive and fair environment where every student feels heard and valued. We recognize that challenges and misunderstandings can arise, and we aim to provide clear and equitable processes to address concerns. The Student Non-Academic Grievance Policy and the Academic Grievance Policy are designed to ensure that all grievances are handled with respect, clarity, and impartiality. These policies empower students to voice their concerns and seek resolution in a professional and constructive manner.

Student Non-Academic Grievance Policy

A grievance is a formal claim by a student asserting adverse effects due to the misapplication, misinterpretation, or non-enforcement of a university or community college policy by an official.

The policy is designed to secure equitable solutions for misunderstandings, differences of opinion, or concerns. And to seek clarification or interpretation of university policies.

Academic Grievance Policy (Student Grades)

This policy focuses on disputes arising specifically from academic grading. It's designed to provide a professional mechanism for students to seek resolution if they believe they’ve been graded arbitrarily, capriciously, or prejudicially.

Complaints such as "a test was too difficult" or "a grading scale was too high" do not qualify for appeals.

Appeals require specific evidence that the student was treated differently than peers.

A complete version of the grievance policies and procedures can be found in the Student Handbook.
