English as a Second Language

Ready to boost your English skills and succeed in your studies?

ESL Students

Our English as a Second Language (ESL) courses will help you to become more successful in your academic studies by improving your English language skills. Classes will focus on key subject areas like writing, reading, listening, speaking, and English pronunciation and fluency.

Lilia Moyer, ESL Director, will help you along your Rio journey. With Lilia, you will set a date for your written English Placement Test. The result of this test will tell you what ESL course you will take during your first semester. There are four levels of ESL Program courses at Rio to help you develop the necessary academic skills you need to succeed in your academic studies. Each course is more difficult, more complex, and demands higher language proficiency. Class sizes are small, which will help you learn all the skills you will need to be successful in your academic life.

Baptiste Peyre-Bourdette is from Pau, France. He is a 19-year-old soccer player at Rio. He came to Rio to pursue a business degree and play soccer. He plans to graduate in 2027. What he likes the most about Rio is that it is a quiet place where he can study without distractions. He joined the ESL Program in the Fall term of 2023 and graduated from it in 2024. He is currently taking English Composition 1. He says the ESL Program helped him improve his speaking, listening, and especially writing skills. After he graduates, he plans to pursue an MBA. Baptist would like Americans to know that France is a beautiful country, and there is more to it than just Paris. Many other cities with beautiful landscapes deserve attention as well.
