Whether you are a first-time college student, returning after a few years hiatus, or a transfer student– you’ll find everything you need right here to start your journey.
As a reminder, there are a few steps before we get started. First, be sure you have scheduled a virtual orientation, Storm Start. Second, if you haven’t submitted to meet with an advisor to register for classes, please submit your information here.
Student Space is a Rio student’s hub for all your vital information. This is where you can see your grades, billing information, register for classes, financial aid awards, and more. Plan now to become familiar with the different tabs and information found there. Visit the MyRio section and click students space to get started.
- Select WorkGroup = Student
- User ID is just your student ID# (no S – that is RioNET usernames)
- The default password is the last four digits of your Social Security number

RioNet is a collective term for your accounts associated with Blackboard, campus computers, email, and Wi-Fi. Your account was created as soon as you were accepted. Your user name is the letter ‘s’ plus your student ID. Before using your RioNET account though, you need to register for the self-service password reset portal located at www.rio.edu/myrio .
- Click Password Registration.
- Type your full RioNET email address as your username (e.g. firstname.lastname@example.org). and use your default Password (RioNET+ the last four digits of your SSN (Case Sensitive – e.g. RioNET####). Then follow the onscreen instructions to complete registration.
Once registered for self-service password resets, you can navigate to the Password Reset Portal and change your RioNET password. Follow the onscreen instructions. This password change will be the password for campus computers, Blackboard, Wi-Fi, and email. At Rio, online and hybrid classes are taught via Blackboard Learning Management System. Even though you may not be registered for an online class or intend to take any online classes, many of our faculty provide information on Blackboard. Some faculty will use Blackboard as a support for the face-to-face classes. Your course syllabi, course materials, tests, assignments, online grades, etc… could be located here as an additional resource.
Because of this, we ask that all new students gain login and become familiar with the Blackboard system.

Many of your books needed at Rio are obtained through MSB Direct, an online bookstore portal that works in conjunction with our physical Rio bookstore located in the Rhodes Student Center to make a seamless way to get your materials for a successful semester.
To get started ordering your books, head to your Student Space account. Look at your class schedule and see the course section, as well as the course number of the class. Please note, that some books must still be directly purchased at/from the Rio Bookstore. Once you have the course section and course number visit MSB Direct to get started ordering. Enjoy free shipping by ordering early and having books sent directly to the Rio Bookstore.
- Need to return a book to MBS Direct? The Rio Bookstore will help you – please contact them directly; they will help you pack and prepare your book for return.
- Want to use Financial Aid? – As long as your financial aid is in order, you may use it to purchase most of the books offered through both MBS Direct and the Rio Bookstore
- Orders are accepted now for Summer Terms; Orders for Fall Term will be accepted beginning July 1st.

Rio will send monthly student account notifications to your student e-mail accounts. As a new student, your first bill is the only paper bill you will receive. Paper bills will no longer be mailed. Students are responsible for handling their bills. If parents assist with payment, students are responsible for forwarding bills to their parents.
Your bills will be sent to both your StudentSpace account and your Rio email. Please log-in often. This is how most campus-related information is sent as well as all your financial statements.

A quality college education is within reach for everyone at Rio Grande. More than 80 percent of all Rio students receive financial aid in the form of scholarships, grants, loans or work study. The primary focus of the Financial Aid Office is to assist you with the challenge of paying for your education. The key to financing your education is to plan early and keep your options open.
Rio offers more than 300 forms of financial aid to support you in your educational endeavors. Scholarships make up the majority of these opportunities, with grants, loans and federal Work-Study also available. The first step to qualify for financial aid at Rio Grande is to fill out your FAFSA online using the college code 003116.

Residential life can play an important role in your college career. We encourage all students who want to enhance their college experience to live on campus. Full-time students who live outside of a 50-mile radius to campus are required to reside on campus for four semesters. Exceptions are made for students who are married, single parents, over the age of 22, or have permanent residency in Gallia, Jackson, Meigs, or Vinton counties. Whether you choose to live on campus or commute from home, there are many ways to enhance your student experience at Rio. The Office of Student Engagement oversees more than 20 student organizations and dozens of recreational and educational events annually.

All Rio students are required to have a student ID and should keep it on them at all times. You will need your ID when swiping into the cafeteria, picking up financial aid checks, attending social functions, and using the fitness center.
To get a student ID, you should bring a copy of your schedule or acceptance letter (with your student ID number) to Campus Police, located at 504 E. College Ave. Campus Police Office is staffed Monday through Friday, 8am – 5pm.
If you are attending classes at our Jackson, McArthur, or Meigs Branches and do not wish to come to the main campus, the branch staff will take your photo and send it to the main campus. Your ID card will be sent to the branch for pick up.
