What was your major? It was an individualized major in Public Administration
What made you choose Rio? Rio provided a quality education and it was close to home.
What was your best professional experience at Rio (exhibition, recital, performance, presentation, project, etc.)? Becoming a member of Phi Alpha Theta
What was your favorite course at Rio…and why? I thoroughly enjoyed my History classes. Especially Vietnam and the Civil Rights Movement. I enjoyed the historical perspective of these significant events.
What do you miss most about Rio? I was part of an informal cohort of classmates that were enrolled in most of my classes. I really miss the friendships.
What advice would you give current students at Rio? No matter what major you pursue or career dreams, find something that involves service to others. Public service is incredibly rewarding.
Where do you work now? What’s your job title? I currently serve as one of two Assistant Superintendents of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. I hold the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
What was your first “big break”? My promotion to sergeant in 1996. Pursuing and obtaining my education at Rio had a significant impact on my opportunities for advancement in the Patrol.
What are some of your greatest or most recent professional achievements? I have been honored to serve in various positions/ranks within the Highway Patrol. In 2012, I completed graduate school at The Ohio State University with a major in Public Policy.
What kinds of art, music, writing, research or academic work are you doing now? I am currently teaching in an undergraduate program at Ohio University.
What’s next in your career? I plan to retire in the next six years and continue to teach. I find it very rewarding to pay forward to the students with aspirations in becoming police officers/state troopers.
If you couldn’t have your current career, what would you do for a living? I would have been a high school history teacher.
If you could spend the day with any fine artist, living or dead, who would it be? Earnest Flagg (architect of the Academy Chapel at the U.S. Naval Academy)
What is your favorite book: The Bible is my favorite read! I also like to read history, especially American military history and the American civil rights movement.

Do you live with a spouse, children, roommates or pets? I have been married for over 30 years to my best friend Becky. We have an adult son who is an attorney and a 3-year old Weimaraner named Kaiser who is my running partner.
What’s the one thing that most people don’t know about you? I love listening to Christian Rap music while doing long runs.
