Daniel Carroll is a senior English major from Liverpool, England.
He will graduate in May 2018.
What are your plans after graduation? I would like to do an MA in Philosophy.
Did you grow up with siblings or pets? Two sisters (one older, one younger), and a dog named Keel.
What was your best experience in high school? Selling candy and earning a fortune.
Who was your most influential high school teacher? My Physical Education teacher was motivational and inspiring.
Why did you choose Rio? I came here to play at one of the highest levels of collegiate soccer.
What’s your best experience at Rio so far? Winning a National Championship.
What’s your greatest achievement as a student? Perhaps making the Dean’s list… but witnessing my own academic growth more so.
Why did you choose to major in English? To satisfy my thirst for adventure and knowledge.
What was your favorite course at Rio so far…and why? Social Ethics, because I resonated with so many of the theories and it helped me to understand and solidify my own moral value system.
What do you plan to do after graduation? Where do you see yourself in ten years? I plan to obtain a PhD in Philosophy, and then maybe become a college professor.
What’s the best part of being a student? Meeting kindred spirits around campus and growing together whilst making memorable experiences.
What’s the worst? Getting out of bed.
What advice would you give to incoming Freshmen? Persevere. There will be times when you feel overwhelmed by your academia. However, as one great philosopher once said: “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” – Viktor E. Frankl. Embrace the change, it’s for the better.
