Men's hoops 10th in MSC preseason poll

COLUMBIA, Ky.  The University of Rio Grande has been picked to finish 10th in the 2013-2014 Mid-South Conference preseason men's basketball coaches poll.

Head coach Ken French returns three starters, including reigning MSC Freshman of the Year D.D. Joiner, from last year's squad that finished 11-19 overall and 6-14 in league play.

Defending NAIA National Champions Georgetown College is the favorite to capture the Mid-South Conference regular season title in 2013-14, according to the MSC Preseason Coaches' Poll released on Tuesday by conference officials.

Georgetown received 78 voting points from the conference coaches, including six of the 10 first-place votes. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.

The Tigers had a magical run to the program's second national title last season as the NAIA Tournament's 13th seed. Georgetown finished last season 29-8 overall, including a 14-6 Mid-South Conference record.

University of Pikeville is projected to finish second in the conference. The Bears (26-7, 15-5 in the MSC last season) received 72 voting points and three first-place votes.

Two-time defending MSC regular season champions Lindsey Wilson College is third in the balloting. The Blue Raiders (33-5, 16-4) picked up 68 voting points and the final first-place vote. Lindsey Wilson also captured the MSC Tournament title last season and reached the NAIA Fab Four.

Campbellsville University (20-12, 12-8) and University of the Cumberlands (19-13, 10-10) are a close fourth and fifth in the preseason poll. The Tigers received 53 voting points while the Patriots picked up 52 voting points from the coaches' vote.

St. Catharine College (13-14, 9-11) is projected to finish sixth with 36 voting points followed by Shawnee State University (16-14, 11-9) with 34 voting points.

Cumberland University, Bluefield College and University of Rio Grande complete the 10-team poll. Cumberland (9-20, 5-15) garnered 25 voting points while Bluefield (10-17, 5-15) and Rio Grande received 17 and 15 voting points respectively.

The Mid-South Conference regular season tips-off on November 21, 2013 with the MSC Tournament set for March 6-9 at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center in Lebanon, Tenn.
