SOUTH POINT, Ohio – University of Rio Grande head softball coach Kristen Bradshaw has announced the signing of South Point High School graduate Katelynn Leonard for the 2014 season.

Leonard, a 5-foot-3 second baseman/outfielder, will actually be resuming her career. She was an Honorable Mention All-Ohio Valley Conference selection for then-head coach Tara Layne's Pointers as a senior in 2011.

"I'm really excited and can't wait get to started," said Leonard. "Getting the opportunity to play in college has been a goal of mine since I was in the fourth grade."

Bradshaw said she's excited to see if Leonard can pick up where she left off when her high school career came to an end.

"Katelynn has what you can't teach - a love for the game," she said. "Although she's been out of the game a few years, she'll be a leader on and off the field for us. Adding her to the roster is only a positive for us. She has speed and is willing to play wherever we need her. I can already tell she's an athlete that picks up on things quickly and we're excited to get her out on the field this fall."

Leonard, who plans to major in Early Childhood Education, said that Rio Grande offered the chance to "finally tryout my dream".

"I feel like I need to work on my batting, but I also feel like I can bring support and a positive attitude to the team," Leonard said. "I just want to play and have fun."

Leonard is the daughter of Julie and Jason Leonard of South Point.
