Rio Grande Sports Information
LANCASTER, Ohio – University of Rio Grande head softball coach Kristen Bradshaw has announced the signing of former Lancaster High School standout Kali Weidner for the 2014 season.
Weidner, a 5-foot-7 second baseman/outfielder, was a three-year letterwinner for coach Greg Rosser's Golden Gales, who finished 9-16 after a loss to Delaware Hayes in the second round of district tournament play.
Her former high school teammate, Jenna Jones, also recently signed to play at Rio.
"I am beyond excited," said Weidner, an honorable mention All-Ohio Capital Conference selection. "Having the chance to play college softball is something I've thought about since I was old enough to play - probably since I was eight years old."
Bradshaw said she's excited with the addition of Weidner, who was signed after participating in walk-on tryouts earlier this week"
"Kali has a great attitude and is very athletic with great speed on the bases," she said. "Her positive attitude and range in the outfield is something we lost from last season. I think Kali will fill that role well."
Weidner, who plans to major in Cardiac Sonography, said she's ready to get her collegiate career underway.
"I think I can bring positive energy and teamwork to the program. I always try to hustle and push myself," she said.
And for her ulimate goal while with the RedStorm?
"I want to play - and start A.S.A.P.," Weidner said with a laugh.
Weidner is the daughter of Joe and Teresa Weidner of Lancaster.
