Reckner to resume running career at Rio
GROVE CITY, Ohio – University of Rio Grande cross country/track & field head coach Bob Willey has announced the signing of Central Crossing High School’s Jessica Reckner for the 2013-14 school year.
Reckner, a 5-foot-6 distance runner, is a 2012 graduate of CCHS where she ran both cross country and track for head coach Doug Boggs’ Comets. Her track & field events included the 400-meter dash, the 800-meter run, the 1600-meter run, 3200-meter run, the 4x800 relay and the 4x1600 relay.
“I’m very excited. I’ve missed being on a team,” Reckner said. “Getting to run in college was something I started thinking about during my freshman year. I lost sight of it for a while, but now I’m back on track.”
Reckner, who was already planning to attend Rio Grande, said that getting the opportunity to resume her career with the RedStorm was “like a dream come true”.
“As a freshman, Jessica ran for coach Mark Tremayne, who directed a number of athletes to us while he was there,” Willey said. “She had a very solid high school career in both cross and track.”
Reckner acknowledged a need to improve her efforts on the hills, but added that she won’t be side-stepping the work needed to make it happen.
“I’m going to bring a hard-working new runner to the program,” she said. “I just want to do the best that I can and continue to get better.”
Regardless of the circumstances surrounding Reckner’s arrival to the program, Willey said he’s happy to have her on board for the coming season.
“Jessica’s been out a year working, but she decided recently that she wanted to go back to school,” he said. “She’s continued to work out and stay in shape. I think she’ll be able to come in and help us out immediately.”
Reckner has yet to decide on a field of study.
She is the daughter of Bill and Tammy Reckner of Harrisburg, Ohio.
