The University of Rio Grande Symphonic Band, under the direction of Gary Stewart, will present their fall concert November 19 at 8:00pm in the Christensen Theatre in the John W. Berry Fine and Performing Arts Center on campus. The group is made up of seventy community members and outstanding high school seniors as well as University music students and faculty.
This year’s concert has a great deal of variety, according to Stewart. Three medleys will be performed including “A Tribute to Charles Strouse,” that is all Broadway tunes, a tribute to the music of Duke Ellington entitled “Classic Duke,” and a blues medley featuring Chris McDerment, adjunct woodwind instructor in the Fine Arts Department. McDerment is a graduate of Marshall University and recently completed his Master’s at Ohio University. He will be performing on the soprano saxophone.
Other selections on the concert include “In Flight” and “Henepin County Dawn” by Samuel Hazo, and a march “Heroes of the Patriotic War.” The concert is free to the public and University students are encouraged to attend as a LA 101 event.
