All area residents are invited to an upcoming event at the University of Rio Grande where they will be able to enjoy hearing ghost tales told by a professional storyteller while they also eat some tasty hot dogs.
The fun will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20 on the first floor inside the Davis Library on the Rio Grande campus.
The Wiener Roast and Ghost Tales event, which is being held as part of the National Friends of the Libraries Week celebration at Rio Grande, is being coordinated by the Friends of the Davis Library and the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society at Rio Grande.
Donna Wilson, an Appalachian Storyteller who is from Middleport, will be the featured storyteller for the day. Wilson has told stories at previous Rio Grande events, and has been featured at numerous special events all around the region. Area residents of all ages will enjoy hearing how she presents her tales and entertains her audiences.
Classes from Rio Grande Elementary School have been invited to attend, and other children from the region are also encouraged to be a part of the day.
The day will also include a wiener roast, and those in attendance will be able to eat hot dogs and chips, while treat bags will also be handed out.
While the Davis Library serves the university community with its volumes of materials and resources, part of its mission is also to serve the four-county area. The Davis Library is involved in outreach programs throughout the year to encourage all area residents to visit the library for both reading entertainment and research.
The outreach programs include working with area schools, for example, and local students are invited into the Davis Library all through the year to use the materials for school projects, or to just enjoy reading different materials.
Events such as this one also are designed to help area students feel comfortable on college campuses so that they will be encouraged to attend a college or university after finishing high school.
Area residents of all ages are invited to the Tuesday activity.
The Sigma Tau Delta members at Rio Grande are helping to organize the Wiener Roast and Ghost Tales as part of the many different activities it is involved with on campus. In addition, the English Honor Society is also recruiting new students to join the organization, and the members will have information on hand for any interested students.
The Friends of the Davis Library regularly holds special activities and presentations on campus and in the community to promote the library and the resources available to the general public. One current activity that the Friends group is involved in is the Bookplate donation program. This program allows area residents to purchase bookplates that are placed inside new books in the library in honor of different individuals or events.
Bookplates can be purchased to recognize holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, new babies, graduations, retirements, memorials and other special events. This year, the money raised through the Bookplate program is being used to purchase books especially for students in the Holzer School of Nursing. The nursing books will be available in the Davis Library for the nursing students, and will add to the latest materials needed for students in this healthcare profession.
