Jazz, Rock Ensembles combine for fall concert

November 21, 2013

RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Tuesday, Nov. 26 will mark a historic first for the Music Department at the University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College.

Rio Grande has a long and illustrious musical history filled with masterful performances. Tuesday promises to be another with the Jazz and Rock Ensembles hosting a combined fall concert. The performance, free and open to the public, is scheduled for 8 p.m. in the Berry Fine & Performing Arts Center.

“This is the first time these ensembles have joined together to perform songs that bridge the gap between rock and jazz,” said Dr. Chris Kenney, director for both ensembles. “The audience will enjoy an evening of jazz/rock classics from bands like Chicago; Blood, Sweat & Tears; Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs & Englishmen; and even the Blues Brothers.”

The concert gives each ensemble the chance to perform songs they otherwise would not have an opportunity to experience.

The Jazz Ensemble consists of Rio Grande students and community members. Ensemble members include Justine Baker (tenor saxophone), Kristin Coen (alto saxophone), Jacob Hocker (trumpet), Jordan Lombardo (bass), Matt Rinehart (trombone) and Skyler Thompson (drums).

The Rock Ensemble consists solely of Rio Grande students. Members include Terry Byers (guitar), Jeremy Martin (bass, keyboards), Andy Milliken (vocals, guitar), Tyler Phillips (vocals, guitar), Ally Waddell (vocals, keyboards) and Brooke Wolni (vocals, flute).
