RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The artistic works of Kelly O’Brien have exhibited internationally from Miami to Finland, and now Rio Grande.

O’Brien has joined the School of Fine Arts at the University of Rio Grande / Rio Grande Community College as its 2013 Artist in Residence. She will present a lecture, free and open to the public, at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 14 in the Davis University Center Boardroom.

O'Brien's work is challenging and pushes a lot of boundaries about what art can be and should do,” said Professor Benji Davies, School of Fine Arts Chair. “Her lecture will be a good opportunity to explore ideas about the nature of the visual arts and how an artist thinks about image and object.”

O’Brien, as Artist in Residence, is teaching Sculpture and Art History courses at Rio Grande. She also is traveling to area schools to conduct workshops for teachers and students.

O’Brien’s work has been exhibited internationally at venues such as the AQUA Art Fair during Miami Basel, Pedvale Sculpture Park in Sabile, Latvia and an iron casting symposium in Pirkkala, Finland.

Her recent awards include an Ox-Bow residency scholarship funded by the Joan Mitchell Foundation, an artist grant for the Vermont Student Center, a merit-based scholarship to attend a workshop at Anderson Ranch Fine Art Center, selection as a semifinalist for the VCUarts Fountainhead Fellowship in the Department of Painting + Printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University and juried recognition on Dave Bown Projects.

O’Brien will exhibit her latest work in April at the Esther Allen Greer Museum. An opening reception is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 18.

“Its all work that I’m making for the Greer Museum,” O’Brien said. “I make site specific installations. …  I build pieces that are specific to the space; so it becomes very integrated with the place I do the residency.”
