Students from the University of Rio Grande’s chapter of the English Honors Society, Sigma Tau Delta, traveled to Louisville, Kentucky for the organization’s annual conference. Professor of English Dr. Elizabeth Brown said she is glad her students over the years have gotten the chance to travel the country for the event.

“This conference is a wonderful opportunity to see new places and network with other students from around the country,” Brown said. “The conference features speakers and workshops as well as several panel presentations like the one Alyssa took part in. It’s a great opportunity to be a part of this kind of professional setting while in college. I’m very proud of these students for their hard work and representing Rio and our Sigma Tau Delta chapter.”

Senior English major Alyssa Smith of Columbus was selected for the second year in a row to present a paper during the event. This year, her paper explored the formation of the short story genre. She said she was excited to get another opportunity to present at the conference.

“I’m really thankful to present my paper and represent Rio again at this conference. Last year helped me prepare for this because it gave me more public speaking experience and made me more confident in presenting,” Smith said. “I’ve really enjoyed getting the opportunity to travel with these conferences and meet other English majors and professionals. I’m really grateful that we get the chance to do this through Rio.”

Sigma Tau Delta members Daniel Carroll, Lucas LeMaster and Kristen Rollins also attended the conference to show support for their classmates. Rollins, a senior psychology major, said she enjoys getting to meet new people and share new ideas during the event.

“I love conference atmospheres because there are so many intelligent young people in one space. Seeing everyone there to promote their academic ideas and achievements is really refreshing because it reminds you of why you started college,” Rollins said. “It’s also great to share different perspectives about topics we’ve discussed in class and bring these conversations back to the classroom discussion.”

The English Honors Society has had a chapter at Rio for the past 25 years and has participated in the conference seven years in the past decade.
