Jazz Ensemble to honor Dave Brubeck

April 22, 2013

RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The legendary works of Dave Brubeck will be performed by the University of Rio Grande / Rio Grande Community College Jazz Ensemble during a free concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 23 in the auditorium of the Berry Fine & Performing Arts Center.

Brubeck, who passed in December, was one of the foremost jazz pianists and composers of the 20th century. In 1954, he became the second jazz musician featured on the cover of Time Magazine (after with Louis Armstrong). He received the Benjamin Franklin Award for Public Diplomacy in 2008, and in 2009 President Barack Obama made Brubeck a Kennedy Center Honoree.

Brubeck’s music ranges from refined elegance of West Coast jazz to bombastic swinging improvisations at the piano, using handful of notes. The Dave Brubeck Quartet, along with saxophonist Paul Desmond, produced one of the most popular jazz albums of all time – Time Out – that explored odd, irregular meters like 5/4 in the popular “Take Five.”

Brubeck formed the first racially integrated band in the armed forces while serving in the U.S. Army in World War II. A cultural ambassador throughout his career, he worked with the State Department to bring jazz around the world. Brubeck honored the people that he visited, often incorporating their musical language into his own compositions such as “Maori Blues” and “Koto Song”, which the Jazz ensemble will perform.

Rio Grande’s Jazz Ensemble consists of Justine Baker (flute and tenor saxophone), Chad Baker (trumpet), Paul Hogue (trombone), Thomas Milliken (guitar), Megan Cantrell (vibraphone), Jeremy Martin (double bass), Jordan Lombardo (electric bass) and Skyler Thompson (drums), under the direction of Dr. Chris Kenney (piano).
