Welsh Studies Minor The University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College represent a unique marriage between public and private education, between career and liberal arts education, and between younger and older students. The Minor in Welsh StudiesWelsh Language is a course ideal for beginners. Conversational Welsh is taught by native of Wales in a friendly atmosphere. This course introduces language through the music and culture of Wales and also through art and film. Optional summer schools in Wales are also available. Syllabus. The Archaeology of Roman Britain is a study of the archaeology and history of Wales, Scotland and England from the first century B.C. to the end of the sixth century A.D. British History is covered in two courses, which stress the relationship of government and society in the four nations that make up the British Isles. The History of Wales is covered in two courses beginning with the legends that have shaped the cultural and political development of Wales from ancient times to social, religious, economic, and political developments in modern Wales. British Literature is offered in two courses with selected authors, works and literary forms from the Medieval Renaissance and Neo Classical eras to the literature of modern Britain. Survey of Welsh Literature is a general overview of the whole scope of Welsh literature from the earliest times to the present and includes material as purely works of literature as well as historical/social documents. Syllabus. The Arthurian Tradition looks at the beginning of Welsh literature, the mythic/legendary material of the Mabinogion, and other stories traditionally associated with the four branches. The material will be supplemented with several of the romances connected to Chretien de Troyes, whose work is widely thought to be of Welsh origin, and two of whose works parallel the Welsh Romances, Peredur and Owain. Seminar: Welsh Culture in America offers an analysis of the role the Welsh have played in America and focuses on the Welsh contribution to history, literature and the arts in the United States and Canada. These are taught by Rio Grande faculty from both Wales and America, in addition to guest lectures from Wales.
