Learn Welsh

Rio Grande

Welsh Language classes were offered here as a Welsh minor subject.  Kara Lewis BA was the language tutor and Welsh Literature lecturer.  She has extensive experience in teaching Welsh to adults while she was at the University of Wales, Lampeter.  Below is a picture of Kara with some of her class at their Christmas party 1999.

We learned one of Europe’s oldest languages in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.   We teach an informal register of the language using the highly successful course “Dosbarth Nos”.

The course has been running for a few years and the response has been very encouraging.

The class of Winter 2000

The Madog Center was fortunate to have the company of Welsh teacher Andrew Tweed for a week in 2000.  Mr. Tweed comes from Llandrindod, Mid-Wales and had the pleasure of teaching Kara throughout her high school years.  In the pictures below Andrew is teaching the Welsh students Twmpath Dawns, which was great fun!  He also taught Welsh classes in the University and visited local schools, teaching dancing and talking about Wales.

A Little Welsh Course 2001

The Madog Center understands that people cannot always come to Rio Grande to study Welsh.  For this reason, we held the first annual Little Welsh Course in Columbus, Ohio.

This course was held in conjunction with the The Welsh Society of Central Ohio.  It was an Intensive Welsh Course on April 27th & 28th. The course was held at Otterbein College, Columbus. Mary Ellen Morgan arranged the course, but many others helped to make it such a success: Mrs. Joan Owen Mandry (pictured below) taught one of the classes and Kara Lewis lead the other (with the help of a certain Dr. Dafydd Mandry!) WCSO members and many students worked very hard! Some 30 people attended both days.

Keep your eyes open for the next course, or contact the Madog Center or the WSCO for details.

Summer School

Two Rio students, Nikki Dixon and Lennie Gooldin spent over 3 weeks studying Welsh in Lampeter in the summer of 2000.  Their study was made possible through a National Welsh-American Foundation grant which paid for their academic fees.  They lived in the beautiful town and experienced life in a Welsh community.  The girls represented the Madog Center, URG and America in the Wales international Ceremony in the National Eisteddfod of Wales.  Both students, who have Welsh ancestry, said it was a heartwarming and enlightening experience and can't wait to return!

Pictured below are Mark Abell, Lennie Gooldin, Nikki Dixon, Kara Lewis, Ellie Drummond and Brian Abell.
