St. David's Day 2001

Luncheon and Lecture

Dinge Jones, Jackson

St. David’s Day in Rio Grande was celebrated with a festive luncheon.  University of Rio Grande staff and students and local Welsh enjoyed a feast of traditional cawl, cheeses and bread.

The group ate heartily and entered into the spirit of fellowship.  The event drew to a close with the singing of the National Anthem in Welsh.  Due to the success of the luncheon, it was decided that this will be an annual event.

An additional St. David’s Day activity was held on March 3rd.  Mari Morgan , the highly acclaimed mezzo-soprano agreed to give the First Annual St. David’s Day Lecture.  Mari talked about Cor Cymry Gogledd America, the North American Welsh Choir, and was grilled as to why did she embark on such an immense project and, of course, how did she manage to “assemble” such a unique choir!

Mari also talked about her career as a singer.  Following the discussion, Mari introduced a Welsh song “Hafan Gobaith” (Another Day, Delyth Rees/ Eleri Richards) to the group which consisted of music students and Grande Chorale members. The choir enthusiastically took up the challenge and have promised to include the piece into their growing Welsh repertoire.  All involved in this event feel honored to have had the privilege of Mari’s company and experience.  We look forward to seeing her in Rio Grande again.  Diolch, Mari.
