Chemistry @ Rio Grande

Welcome to the University of Rio Grande Chemistry Department homepage. Our department offers two degree options -  the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and the Associate of Science in Chemistry. Both programs have been designed to provide students with a well-rounded background in Chemistry and to provide students with the tools necessary to pursue any number of post-graduation directions. In addition, we offer a minor in Chemistry to accompany a Bachelor's degree of a student's choosing.

Recent Happenings

2011-2012 Chemistry Cook-out

The Chemistry Department recently hosted its 3rd annual cook-out for Chemistry and AYA Physical Sciences Education students. It was moved to the fall to avoid scheduling conflicts with end-of-the-year activities in April. Attendance was up from the previous year's cook-out in the spring. There was plenty of food and fun.

Chemistry Scholarship Competition

If you are a high school senior and are interested in majoring in chemistry, the Chemistry Department will be hosting a scholarship competition Friday, November 18, 2011. The competition day will include tours of campus and the science facilities, a knowledge-based exam, and lunch. The knowledge-based exam will include questions about atomic structure, chemical reactions and stoichiometry, gas laws, thermochemistry, chemical bonding, molecular shape, intermolecular forces, solutions, acid-base chemistry, and nuclear chemistry. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet the Chemistry faculty members and students who are currently majoring in Chemistry at Rio Grande.

First prize is a full-tuition, four-year scholarship. Several partial scholarships will also be awarded.

Application for admission to Rio Grande is required in addition to registration for the scholarship competition.

2011 Graduating Students

The Chemistry Department would like to recognize and congratulate graduating students Milen Bodurski (left), Brittany Bissell (right), Matt Buckner, Drew McCaffrey, and Jordan Roush (all not pictured). Milen obtained a B.S. in Chemistry-Physics. Brittany obtained an A.A. in Chemistry to accompany her B.S. in Health Care Administration. Matt obtained a B.S. in AYA Physical Science Education. Drew obtained an A.A. in Chemistry to accompany his B.S. in Biology. Jordan obtained an A.A. in Chemistry to accompany his B.S. in Biology and B.S. in Environmental Science. Milen is seeking employment in the chemical industry, while Drew is entering graduate school at Marshall University. Matt and Jordan are seeking employment in their respective disciplines. Brittany will be entering the Pharm. D. program at Midwestern University (Glendale, AZ campus). She was also accepted into the programs at The Ohio State University and University of Cincinnati. Good luck to all the graduates!

Middle School Field Trip

The School of Sciences recently hosted approximately 200 sixth graders from Jackson Middle School for a day of science activities. This was part of Dr. White's Math-Science Partnership grant for which he is Principal Investigator. Chemistry faculty and students participated in these activities providing the middle school students with demonstrations and hands-on laboratory experiences regarding chemical and physical changes.

Grant Awarded

The School of Sciences (Dr. Jacob White, Principal Investigator) is one of 12 recipients of a 2011 Pittsburgh Conference Memorial National College Grant. The University of Rio Grande proposal was one of 59 proposals that were submitted for this award. The award will be utilized to purchase an Atomic Absorption Spectrometer that will benefit courses in Chemistry and Environmental Science as well as research in Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Wildlife and Fish Conservation and Management.
