Alternative or private loans can be a suitable option for students seeking others means outside of Federal Student Aid in which to pay for their cost of education. It is the student’s sole responsibity to apply for and follow the appropriate steps in order to secure funding through an alternative loan. Alternative loans are credit based and may require the student to list a co-signer on their loan application, may or may not have a fixed interest rate, and often require that a student be enrolled at least half time (6 credit hours).
If a student has been approved for an alternative loan, they must notify the Financial Aid Office so that we may certify their enrollment at the University of Rio Grande, as this is a vital step that must be completed before a lender will release loan funds to the student or their student account. In addition, all students who are approved for an alternative student loan must complete a SELF-CERTIFICATION FORM to be submitted to their lender.
