Berry Center for Economic Development
HOME > Academics > Berry Center for Economic Development
Teachers of elementary and high school students rarely study economics in college. The Loren M. Berry Center conducts seminars and conferences preparing teachers to integrate economics into their regular curriculum for students in K-12.
Area business representatives join with teachers and administrators to define goals and objectives for Economic Education. They also make classroom presentations in both elementary and high schools. Students in our College of Education receive an introduction to basic economics through our Free Enterprise Advocacy Teachers (FEAT) project. These pre-service teachers introduce economics to elementary students during their clinical teaching experience to students throughout the state of Ohio and also in West Virginia.
Our community development and outreach activities include the following: Annual Ethics Seminar - The Berry Center, Students In Free Enterprise and the Gallipolis Rotary Club co-sponsor the Annual Ethics Seminar for area high school students.
Economic Development - The Center for Economic Development supports and assists area economic development professionals, governmental officials and industry leaders in their efforts to further growth in Southern Ohio and West Virginia.
Free Enterprise Advocacy Teachers (F.E.A.T) - $50 Grants are awarded to pre-service teachers here at the University to be used to develop and teach economic lessons during their clinical experience.
Resource Library - Lesson plans, videotapes, and economic curricula are available for teachers and students to research and on loan.
Stock Market Simulation - Provides students with the opportunity to invest $100,000 fantasy money in the stock market. At the end of the trading period, prizes are awarded to the top 3 successful teams.
American Free Enterprise and Leadership Conference - ECO 10302 Free Market Economies. This course exposes students to a broad range of principles and topics. In addition, the students learn about capital formation, the role of profits, taxes, productivity, and entrepreneurship. Open to high school students each summer.
Student in Free Enterprise (SIFE) - Present Free Market Economic lessons to K-12 grade students, while promoting Respect, Reliability, Responsibility and Self-Reliance.
